In October 1971, President Nixon nominated William Rehnquist to fill a vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court. Rehnquist and Sandra Day O’Connor had briefly dated while they were both students at Stanford Law School. When his nomination faced opposition, Sandra used her political savvy and connections from the Arizona Senate to help defend him.

She specifically worked to rebut allegations that Rehnquist had harassed Black and Hispanic voters at a polling place—claims that were ultimately found to be unfounded. Her behind-the-scenes efforts helped ease doubts among Senators.

After Rehnquist was confirmed, he expressed deep gratitude, writing to Sandra: “Words are inadequate to convey my appreciation for what you have done for me.” Sandra recognized the importance of supporting those within her legal and political network, showing her loyalty, strategic thinking, and early influence in national politics.
