Last year Latka moved to the United States. One night he was having dinner in a restaurant in Los Angeles. On the other side of the restaurant he saw Spevna drinking champagne. Latka walked over to him. Hello, there! Hi!Do you remember me? Sure, of course I do. You're a customs officer. I used to be, but I'm not anymore.
I can speak Russian correctly and watch TV, read books, but my conversation is limited because there's not a live environment. I often feel having nothing to say in a conversation when someone starts speaking Russian to me, even though I totally get what this person is saying. I wish I could have lived in a Russian speaking place longer. All I had was three weeks of immersion in Latvia 15 years ago. But anyway, I enjoy listening to the folk music, watching Soviet movies and learning through audiobooks. Now I'm learning to speak Hebrew with an online live program. It's fun because all of sudden everything dawns on me: live expressions matter! Learning a new language is challenging to adults but beneficial to our brains as a mental exercise.
I don't know why it's so hard to learn to speak English. We didn't start learning it at 20 but at 11 or 12 when we were at middle school.I speak perfect English without any apparent accent. I started learning Russian at 18 and I speak good Russian without any apparent accent. Accent isn't a problem. It's the expressions. My English is way better simply because I get to live in the real environment.
