Color Flow Imaging Basics: Color and M-mode Imaging

You may also find color flow imaging helpful during M-mode studies. CFI superimposed on the M-mode display gives specific detail about the timing and duration of jets. In the following example the patient has both mitral and aortic insufficiancy. 

  • Aortic insufficiency (AI), indicated by the mosaic of colors in the left ventricular outflow tract in diastole, and
  • Mitral insufficiency (MI), indicated by the mosaic of colors in the closed mitral valve in systole.

The M-mode visualization of the jets confirms that the aortic insufficiency occurs in early diastole, and that the mitral insufficiency is holosystolic.
