I think Denzel didn't want to kiss Julia because a kiss was absolutely not necessary and out of place for that movie. Their relationship was perfect as it was and didn't need to have any kind of romantic thing. She was his student, he was her professor...they discovered something big together and became allies, friends...he was his protector and mentor, not her lover. It makes perfect sense to me that he didn't want to ruin that with a kiss that didn't need to happen.
