Early Summer by Su Shi
Cicadas’ call choked in willows and scholar trees;
A southern breeze begins to ring the strings.
Beneath the gauze panes, aloe-incense coils at ease.
My siesta breaks to the chessboard’s sudden pings.
The drizzle ceased; small lotus flips in flings,
Punic blossoms blush into flames,
Her slender fingers stir the jade pool into rings —
Ah, by such tender splashing games,
The jade pearls shatter, yet still hold round frames.
