"Mao" suit, spring/summer 1995; edition 2015 Black and white polyester jacquard woven with positive and negative images of Mao Zedong
Chinese American designer Vivienne Tam escaped Mao Zedong's People's Republic of China (1949- 76) at three years old and grew up in Hong Kong during Mao's Cultural Revolution (1966-76). She studied fashion at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, moving to New York in 1981 to launch her career. Tam's upbringing is foundational to her work, which combines elements of Eastern and Western culture. Both insider and outsider to mainland China's political and visual culture, she explored Cultural Revolution propaganda in her "Mao" collection. In collaboration with Chinese artist Zhang Hongtu, Tam checkered this suit with black-and-white inversions of the leader's official portrait, symbolizing "the positive and negative effects" of Mao's influence on China.
