aggie I was in the hospital a few years ago. When I got the bill, I noticed that for 3 days of prescription pills (that I paid $80 a month for), I had been charged $11,000.00. Good thing I had insurance, but still......that's outrageous.
Nim: ......a few years ago I was taken by my family to the emergency room at Wake Med Hospital in Raleigh, NC I waited for about 3 to 5 hours to be seen by an emergency doctor who spoke to me for about two minutes and a charge about $1000 appeared on my bill for that and the most bizarre was that they charged $1,500 for the IV needle they put on my arm even though no medications was ever given to me.
Those ignorant dentists always call me up and tell me what kind of work I need to do on my teeth. I did tooth cannel on my two teeth and have been suffering from the tooth pain ever since even though I didn't feel anything wrong before it.
FYI:
"mrd
I've never ever once been in a hospital.. received a bill that was not patently absurd. I've been charged 300$ for a bandage set to cover an IV..."
I don't think this is very common in US hospitals. I work in a hospital and the charge is very standardlized, with each service item (for example, nurses checking documents, measuring temperature, administering medication and medicine cost, etc.) The insurance company check every item of the order and will judge whether the hospital is over-charging or not.So it's not that easy to cheat the insurance companies!
Also, in the Emergency Department, 1/3 of the patients are without insurance. They add to the cost of the hospital
