Why did this turn into an argument? Remember that each state has two representatives in the Senate. If there were more slave states, the Senate would be more careful to look out for the slave states. However, if the free states controlled the Senate, it would be more interested in the free states. To keep both the free and slave states happy, there had to be an equal number of free and slave states.
In 1819, both Maine and Missouri were asking to become states. Maine would enter as a free state. To keep the Senate equal, Missouri would have to be admitted as a slave state. The people who lived in Missouri, however, did not agree. Some wanted to own slaves while some where against it.
Finally, in 1821, Congress admitted Missouri as a slave state, but only after a compromise was made. Since Missouri was to become a slave state, no other states north of an established boundary line could enter the Union as slave states. This decision was called the Missouri Compromise.
