我和王世荣是医学院大班的同学,来美后又同在一个屋檐下-加州。他在City of Hope工作,我院经常有City of Hope 的护士来做perdime,于是问起Dr.
Many people told me that I "arrived" at the wrong time. "Arrived?" I had no idea what they were trying to tell me. It was as if I had the power to choose the timing of my arrival, like I was sent as a parcel to my family from an unknown place a bit too early.
My great-grandfather was only five years old when he was adopted by a British. general named Armstrong during the first Opium War in the 1800s. He decided to go back to China to discover his roots when he reached his thirties.
Despite efforts from the local government, no one in the village was able to help him trace his original family's whereabouts.
He was given a Chinese last name, Wang, which was the most popular name in the region at the time. He also vaguely recalled that "Wang" might have been his original name anyways, so he changed his name from David Armstrong to David Wang.
The following weeks, I stand at the roof terrace and stare towards the school, hoping Mom will walk out. She didn't die, she probably fell asleep somewhere in one of the classrooms, she'll wake up at any moment and remember to come home.
The next day, my Chinese literature teacher read an old saying during class, "The dragon gives birth to a dragon, the phoenix gives birth to a phoenix, and a mouse's son only knows how to dig a hole." Every kid has been stamped permanently at birth, he can never change who he is or what he will become, he says.
Mom and Dad aren't dragons or phoenixes, I'm a little rat from a rat family, I already know. Ms. Liao had me fooled.
