I was a physics postdoc before. It was the most relaxing time. Although I felt the same way as you do now and moved out of the field, I still feel that period of time was really good.
Plus, I can tell you: it is much better to be a postdoc in Australia than in America!
With such a philosophy, one may spend his/her entire life as a post doctor. I have been a postdoc for some time but I consider it so benefitial. It allowed me to explore many new areas. You should consider the important issues: for example, the first author of a paper that you contrubute the most; your supervisor is willing to help you become independent. Never think about age: even he/she is younger than you. In recent years, it becomes so difficult to get a faculty position, in many cases, postdoc is a necessary step. So if your objective is faculty, be patient, otherwise, find industrial job asap.
Just want to share my opinion with you as an older postdoc.
