旗袍，是一种内与外和谐统一的典型民族服装，被誉为中华服饰文化的代表。它以其流动的旋律、潇洒的画意与浓郁的诗情，表现出中华女性贤淑、典雅、温柔、清丽的性情与气质。 那旗袍是如何而来的呢？ 旗袍的起源有人认为可追溯到春秋战国时期的深衣。深衣自春秋战国至汉代曾为时人所重，后世的袍服或与深衣有着一定的渊源关系。 袍服自汉代被用于朝服，袍服式样历代有变制，汉代深衣制袍，唐代圆领裥袍，明代直身，都是典型的宽身长袍，穿着者多为知识分子及统治阶层，久而久之蔚成风尚。袍服因而代表的是一种不事生产的上层人士及文化人的清闲生活。宽衫大袍，褒衣博带，逐渐成为中原地区衣饰文明的一种象征。 在辽、金、元及清朝等少数民族政权统治时期，合身的袍服都曾一度扮演着服饰的主角，虽然又都经历或表现出变得宽博的过程或趋势。清代由于历时最长且较稳定，故袍服可视为典型服饰。 顺治年间（公元1644年），清世祖入关，定都北京，继而统一全国。随着政权的初步稳固，开始强制实行服制改革。至此传统的冠戴衣裳几乎全被禁止穿戴，相传千年的上衣下裳的服饰形制只被保留在汉族女子家居时的着装中。庆典场合不分男女都要着袍，各类袍服名目繁多，有朝袍、龙袍、蟒袍及常服袍等之分。 从字义解，旗袍泛指旗人（无论男女）所穿的长袍，不过只有八旗妇女日常所穿的长袍才与后世的旗袍有着血缘关系，用作礼服的朝袍、蟒袍等习惯上己不归为“旗袍”的范畴。从顺治、嘉庆年间屡次颁布的禁令中，满族女子违禁仿效汉族妇女装束的风气之盛。至清后期，亦有汉族女子效仿满族装束的。满汉妇女服饰风格的悄相交融，使双方服饰的差别日益减小，遂成为旗袍流行全国的前奏。 清朝后期，旗女所穿的长袍，衣身较为宽博，造型线条平直硬朗，衣长至脚踝。“元宝领”用得十分普遍，领高盖住腮碰到耳，袍身上多绣以各色花纹，领、袖、襟、据都有多重宽阔的滚边。至咸丰、同治年间，镶滚达到高峰时期，有的甚至整件衣服全用花边镶滚，以至几乎难以辨识本来的衣料。旗女袍服的装饰之繁琐，几至登峰造极的境界，此时的清王朝正为挽救危亡，清廷洋务派提出“中学为体，西学为用”的救国方略，派遣大批留学生到国外学习。在中国学生最先出现了西式学生的操衣、操帽，洋装的输入，提供了评判美的另一种参照系，直接影响社会服饰观念的变更。日后旗袍演化为融贯中西的新式款型，其受西方影响的改变可说即是由此开始。 1911年辛亥革命风暴骤起，推翻了中国历史上最后一个封建王朝，为西式服装在中国的普及清除了政治障碍，同时也把传统苛刻的礼教与风化观念丢在了一边，解除了服制上等级森严的种种桎桔。服装走向平民化、国际化的自由变革，已经水到渠成，旗袍由此卸去了传统沉重的负担。旧式的旗女长袍既被摒弃，新式旗袍则在乱世妆扮中开始酿成。 此时的时装流行中心早已由苏、扬移至上海。上海又是妇女寻求解放的重镇。传教士、商人、革命党人竞相创办女学，掀起了一股女权运动浪潮，寻求解放的社会大气候荡涤着服饰妆扮上的陈规陋习，趋向于简洁，色调力求淡雅，注重体现女性的自然之美。旗袍最初是以马甲的形式出现，马甲长及足背，加在短袄上。后将长马甲改成有袖的式样，也就成了新式旗袍的雏形。据说得风气之先的上海女学生是旗袍流行的始俑者。当时的女学生作为知识女性的代表，成为社会的理想形象，她们是文明的象征、时尚的先导，以至社会名流时髦人物都纷纷作女学生装扮。
