“和平”钻石矿位于俄罗斯西伯利亚永久冻土带雅库蒂亚市附近，那儿是世界上最寒冷的地区之一，冬季的温度低至零下50摄氏度。然而就是在这个遥远、偏僻的地方，前苏联和俄罗斯矿工竟然挖出了世界上最大的“人造洞穴”——“和平”钻石矿坑。这个巨大的洞穴直径大约1600米，深度达533米，从卫星照片上看，它就像是地球的一个大伤口。

“坑气”能吞直升机。据悉，由于这个钻石矿坑是如此巨大，以至于直升机也被禁止从它上面飞过。因为这个大洞造成的空气湍流足以将直升机吸进它的内部。一旦直升机被巨洞中紊乱的空气湍流“俘虏”，那将凶多吉少。

曾是苏联最高机密
和平钻石矿坑是世界上最大的人造洞穴。“和平”钻石矿坑曾是克里姆林宫的最高机密之一，它产出的大量钻石使前苏联在美苏争霸中拥有强大的经济资本，即使今天，俄政府仍将它当做“聚宝盆”，渴望从这个巨坑中挖出更多的钻石宝藏。

自从上世纪50年代赫鲁晓夫时期第一批钻石从“和平”钻石矿中被挖掘出来后，至今俄矿工已从该矿中挖出了1.65亿立方米的岩石。

由于这一钻石矿非常重要，克里姆林宫现在又将经营该矿的“艾尔罗萨”公司重新收归联邦政府控制。据悉，俄罗斯99%的未切割钻石都是由“艾尔罗萨”公司供应的，它挖出的钻石占全球23%的钻石产出量。
据悉，“和平”矿坑中的钻石总有枯竭的一天。事实上，“艾尔罗萨”公司已经开始将目光转移到其他西伯利亚地区甚至国外。
