黛玉美丽而聪慧。虽然自小怯弱多病，却有“一段自然的风流态度”。所谓“心较比干多一窍，病如西子胜三分”。心灵纯真，坚执于感情与理想的追求。“孤高自许，目无下尘”，不善于掩饰自己的言行，常用“比刀子还利害”的话语投向庸俗与虚伪，以至被周围的人以为“刻薄”、“专挑人的不好”。在礼教森严，人际关系势利而冷酷的贾府中，她深感自己寄人篱下的屈辱地位，时时“自矜自重，小心戒备”。黑暗的环境，个性的压抑，使她内心蕴积着反抗的情绪。在蔑视权势、渴望自由的思想基础上，她被贾宝玉视为从来不讲“混帐话”的知己，他们由两小无猜而发展为真挚的爱情。黛玉把全部的热情与憧憬都寄托在这一爱情之中。

这爱情给她带来更多痛苦的眼泪。她追求的是执着、专一的爱情，薛宝钗的插入及“金玉良缘”的传说使她疑虑、忧郁。另一方面，由于礼教的束缚，尽管她多次试探宝玉，却不敢明确表达自己的恋情，当宝玉用《西厢》曲词向她吐露衷肠时，她却生气地说他“学了这些混话来欺负我”。这爱情更给她添上一种难以痊愈的“心病”，她不能主宰自己的婚姻，面对强大的封建势力，她无力抗争。于是她“不是愁眉，便是长叹”，落花与眼泪成为她悲苦命运的象征，如她那首著名的《葬花词》所描写：“一年三百六十日，风刀霜剑严相逼，明媚鲜妍能几时，一朝漂泊难寻觅。”又如另一首《桃花行》所说：“眼泪观花泪易干，泪干春尽花憔悴。”这种强烈的悲剧感与幻灭感既是对自身命运的悲悼，也是对不合理封建制度的控诉。

贾母、王夫人为宝玉议婚，终于拣中贤惠明达的薛宝钗，并用凤姐的“掉包儿”之计，瞒过宝、黛而完成“金玉良缘”。宝玉与宝钗成婚之夜，黛玉在潇湘馆里的病榻上，满怀悲愤，焚去诗稿，呕血而死。

《枉凝眉》

一个是阆苑仙葩，一个是美玉无暇。

若说没奇缘，今生偏又遇着他；

若说有奇缘，如何心事终虚话？

一个枉自嗟呀，一个空劳牵挂。

一个是水中月，一个是镜中花。

想眼中能有多少泪珠儿，

怎禁得秋流到冬，春流到夏！
