哥伦布启航

 

意大利探险家克里斯托弗·哥伦布从西班牙帕洛斯港出发，指挥三艘船——圣玛丽亚号、平塔号和尼娜号——启航，意图前往中国、印度和传说中的亚洲黄金和香料岛屿。

 

10月12日，探险队发现了陆地，可能是巴哈马的沃特林岛，并在同一天上岸，声称这是西班牙的。当月晚些时候，哥伦布发现了古巴，他认为古巴是中国大陆，12月，探险队在伊斯帕尼奥拉岛登陆，哥伦布认为可能是日本。他和他的39名手下在那里建立了一个小殖民地。这位探险家于1493年3月带着黄金、香料和“印度”俘虏返回西班牙，并获得了西班牙宫廷的最高荣誉。他是自10世纪维京人在格陵兰和纽芬兰建立殖民地以来第一个探索美洲的欧洲人。

Columbus sets sail

From the Spanish port of Palos, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus sets sail in command of three ships—the Santa Maria, the Pinta and the Nina—on a journey to find a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia.

On October 12, the expedition sighted land, probably Watling Island in the Bahamas, and went ashore the same day, claiming it for Spain. Later that month, Columbus sighted Cuba, which he thought was mainland China, and in December the expedition landed on Hispaniola, which Columbus thought might be Japan. He established a small colony there with 39 of his men. The explorer returned to Spain with gold, spices, and “Indian” captives in March 1493 and was received with the highest honors by the Spanish court. He was the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings set up colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland in the 10th century.

During his lifetime, Columbus led a total of four expeditions to the Americas, discovering various Caribbean islands, the Gulf of Mexico, and the South and Central American mainland, but never accomplished his original goal—a western ocean route to the great cities of Asia. Columbus died in Spain in 1506 without realizing the scope of what he did achieve: He had discovered for Europe the so-called "New World," whose riches over the next century would help make Spain the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth.

On August 3, 1949, after a damaging three-year battle to win both players and fans, the rival Basketball Association of America (BAA) and National Basketball League (NBL) merge to form the National Basketball Association (NBA).

美国鹦鹉螺号核潜艇在北极下航行

 

1958年8月3日，人类历史上的第一艘核潜艇—美国核潜艇鹦鹉螺号完成了第一次前往北极的海底航行。鹦鹉螺号在阿拉斯加的巴罗角潜水，在北极冰盖下行驶了近1000英里，到达了世界之巅。然后，它驶向冰岛，开辟了一条从太平洋到大西洋和欧洲的新的、更短的航线。

 

Nautilus submarine travels under North Pole

 

On August 3, 1958, the U.S. nuclear submarine Nautilus accomplishes the first undersea voyage to the geographic North Pole. The world’s first nuclear submarine, the Nautilus dived at Point Barrow, Alaska, and traveled nearly 1,000 miles under the Arctic ice cap to reach the top of the world. It then steamed on to Iceland, pioneering a new and shorter route from the Pacific to the Atlantic and Europe.

中国散文家杨朔自杀身亡

杨朔（1913年4月28日－1968年8月3日），原名杨毓晋，字莹叔，山东蓬莱人，中国作家。1929年毕业于哈尔滨英文学校，1939年参加八路军，1942年7月到达延安，参加了延安文艺界协会，而后进入中央党校学习。期间先后发表了《月黑夜》、《大旗》、《霜天》等短篇小说。1945年加入中国共产党，后创作了中篇小说《红石山》。1946年秋以随军记者身份参加了平津等战役，创作了中篇小说《北线》。新中国成立后，杨朔任中华全国总工会文艺部长。1959年回到老家蓬莱访问，写下了《蓬莱仙境》、《海市》等散文。1968年8月3日服安眠药自杀。
