Suit says company forced religion on workers

PUYALLUP, Wash. – Medical assistant Lexi Foster says whether or not she was a good employee didn’t matter at Woodcreek Pediatrics in Puyallup.

She says at times her supervisor seemed much more interested in saving Lexi’s soul.

“They would try to make me feel bad for not going to church,” she said. “She would have people come over and pray with me, and she would pray with me. She knew I didn\'t go to church and she would always send people over to convince me.

Foster is one of two former employees who filed suit against Woodcreek this week in federal court.

She says managers retaliated by shuffling her schedule and casting her as a sinner to other employees.

“That I need to be going to church, that I\'m going to hell, that I\'ll take people to hell by my example, she said.

Foster and the other employee filed complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission a year and a half ago.

In a rare condemnation, the EEOC found reasonable cause to believe that Woodcreek Health Care created “an illegal, hostile work environment consisting of religious harassment.”

Foster’s lawyer says the case is not about the company’s right to form values based on religion.

It\'s the imposition of beliefs on employees that we believe oversteps the line,” said Artis Grant, discrimination lawyer.

In a 2003 memo, Woodcreek’s founder tells employees of the company’s “Judeo-Christian principles” and warns them not to embrace conflicting or diverging views.

Dr. Henry Reitzug has retired and could not be reached for comment.

Foster says eventually she felt forced to quit her uob.

“I was just humiliated,” she said.

Foster’s lawyer says the EEOC attempted to settle the case. Woodcreek refused, clearing the way for this week’s lawsuit.
