DUARTE >> Coroner officials on Tuesday identified the man who was killed when his car struck him after it was hit by a big rig on the eastbound 210 Freeway, west of Highland Avenue.
The man got out of his 2015 Toyota Prius after an earlier solo crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Ed Winter, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner, said Mingyi Zhen, 18, of San Francisco died at the scene. The autopsy is pending, he said.
The CHP got a call about a stalled car on the eastbound 210 Freeway at 1:27 a.m. Sgt. Mike Dulong said for an unknown reasons, the Prius had veered to the right and hit the sound wall. It bounced off the wall and ended up disabled on the No. 3 lane.
Zhen got out and began walking around his car, Dulong said.
A 48-year-old Tulare man driving a tractor trailer didn’t see the car until it was too late, according to the CHP.
He stepped on the brakes and swerved. The trailer struck the Prius which then hit Zhen. The 18-year-old was thrown into the next lane.
Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call the Baldwin Park CHP office at 626-338-1164.
