On November 20th, NYPD rookie Officer Peter Liang shot and killed Akai Gurley, an unarmed, Black, 28-year old father, while conducting a vertical patrol in the Louis H. Pink Houses in East New York.
We put out this statement to be clear: that the murder of Akai Gurley is a part of the systemic targeting of Black people by the police, and that Officer Liang must be indicted. As a police officer, he is a part of the institutional injustice we see everyday with law enforcement. We demand an indictment of Officer Liang, just as we have with Darren Wilson and Dan Pantaleo.
To the poster below: how could you assume and therefore conclude without solid evidence that the white cop would tell nothing but the truth? Your logic is simply flawed. Both cops made misconducts and/or mistakes, and only one of them is charged, and you think that's fair? It's conflict of interest because the other cop would have to testify against Mr. Liang in order to get the immunity!

It is not another policeman who made the shot. He got the immunity because he will, under this circumstance, tell the truth, which is the most important point. I believe that he will not make it worse than what it is. They were once colleagues, who are supposed to be supportive to each other. But everybody should be honest. I think the police-african event is not about races, it is about over policing, particularly of African men. It is not right to shot someone too easily.
The justice system (the prosecutor is the colleague of policemen) needs to be changed, otherwise, there are going to be more problems
