据国外媒体报道，新西兰自然资源保护部门官员12月28日表示，在新西兰海滩搁浅死亡的巨头鲸超过了125头，创下了新西兰巨头鲸搁浅死亡纪录。
目前人们还不清楚这群巨头鲸集体搁浅的具体原因。新西兰自然资源保护部门工作人员表示，也许是领头的巨头鲸夜间迷路而导致搁浅事件。由于担心这群巨头鲸在涨潮时再度上岸，一些志愿者决定通宵驻守在海滩密切观察，以便及时采取应对措施，营救可能生还的巨头鲸。
