这是近日发生在西非国家喀麦隆萨那加·杨猩猩援救中心的一幕。死去的黑猩猩名叫多萝茜，死于心力衰竭。按黑猩猩的年龄，它已是快50岁的高龄。工作人员轻轻地把它放在手推车上，在送它去墓地前最后一次轻抚它的前额。多萝茜的同伴们手挽着手，静静地看着这一幕，显得很悲伤。
英国媒体29日报道，最新一期美国《国家地理》杂志采用了这幅照片来表现“悲伤或许是所有动物的天性，然而动物们或许有更复杂的感情，会为同伴的死而悲伤，并且懂得面对死亡”。
动物是不是也具有悲伤等“高级”情感能力？越来越多的证据倾向于认为，这并不是人类独有的能力，许多动物不仅会哀悼死去的亲友，甚至似乎能理解死亡是怎么一回事。
黑猩猩是最接近人类的物种，以前就有研究证明，它们能制造工具以获取食物，甚至具有移情能力，即设身处地揣摩其他同类的想法。它们照镜子时，知道看到的是自己，而不是另一只黑猩猩。它们会用拥抱和亲吻安抚争斗中的伤者。同类死亡时，它们会有明显的悲伤情绪，整个族群会安静地哀悼。
