19世纪末，国际奥委会在法国成立。20世纪初，精武体育会在中国诞生，其创办者，便是素有“精武英雄”之称的霍元甲。

霍元甲(1869-1910)，字俊卿，祖籍河北省东光安乐屯(今属河北沧州市)，世居天津静海小南河村。1910年6月1日，霍元甲在上海成立中国有史以来的第一个体育团体——精武体操会（精武体育会前身）。同年9月14日，不幸中毒身亡，终年42岁。霍元甲去世后，上海精武会由其弟霍元卿、次子霍东阁任教。

霍元甲之子霍东阁霍东阁(生卒年不详)，清末民初直隶天津静海人，著名武术家霍元甲之子。约在1925年，30余岁的霍东阁带着16岁的侄儿霍寿嵩赴南洋谋生，在爪哇(今马来西亚)泗水以教授拳术兼行医药为业。此后5、6年，霍寿嵩均以此为生。图1照片中手持宝剑者为霍东阁，执大刀者为霍寿嵩。
