Right when the movie starts November 1942 is the beginning of the end of Hitler's regime. At that same time the 6th army was starting to freeze in Stalingrad when the winter kicked in and by late December they had no chance of breaking out. Hitler also refused to allow them to break out and promoted Paulus the commander to field marshal. Paulus was not promoted for his command of the 6th army but because no German field marshal in history has ever surrendered. It was pressure to have Paulus kill himself or fight to the end but he did not expect Paulus to surrender. This movie is very important for understanding evil. During World War 1 the Kaiser did not want to abdicate but did and in the end Germany surrendered when the Allies broke through their lines in November of 1918. Kaiser Wilhelm was not a good man but he wasn't evil. He did not want to see his country completely obliterated. Germany was punished severely after World War 1 but if they kept fighting it would have been worse. Their whole country would have been destroyed. After the Kaiser saw Hitler's reign he said for the first time in his life he was ashamed to be German. He didn't live to see Germany's destruction. Hitler refused to ever retreat even it was tactically advantageous. In his eyes even one step back from the battle was considered cowardice. He would sacrifice every last German for his own ego. The scene with him discussing the Nero decree with Speer was very accurate. This was a decree to destroy all German infrastructure including hospitals, farms, factories. Speer was horrified and told Hitler Germany needed them after the war. Hitler told him that the true Germans have died and all that remain are weak and should be destroyed. This is what Hitler thought of Germany in his last days. He never took responsibility and never admitted he was wrong. To him the German people failed him not the other way around. Hitler was one of the most evil men in history but also the biggest narcissist in human history. Not even Stalin was as narcissistic as him. Stalin made a giant mistake purging many good Soviet generals in the 1930s. During World War 2 he largely backed off and let his generals plan where Hitler acted like a military genius and would force his generals to make stupid moves. Speer disobeyed the order and told Hitler himself as in the movie. Hitler for some reason did not have him killed. This was the only reason Speer was spared from the death penalty at Nuremberg. He was one of the few top nazis that was not executed. However even though he wasn't evil he wasn't a good man either. Speer knew about concentration camp prisoners being forced to build projects he was working on. Speer used slave labor. The Himmler scenes are also very historically accurate. Himmler attempted to contact the Allies accepting the war was lost weeks before Hitler did. It shows you how narcissistic and delusional Himmler was that he somehow thought that Eisenhower would negotiate with him. This man was the architect of the Holocaust and killed millions of people. You have to be a really delusional man to think the Allies would negotiate with you. He killed himself after he realized the Allies wouldn't negotiate with him. Lastly that scene at 59:18 is very historically accurate. Hitler was obsessed with Frederick the Great which he considered one of Germany's greatest heroes. Frederick the Great fought a war against Russia and Austria during the Seven Years War and it was a disaster. Russia was invading Prussia and about to take Berlin. At the last moment Elizabeth the Tsar of Russia died and her nephew Peter III took power. He wished to end the war with Prussia and did not invade Berlin saving Frederick. Hitler so delusional thought this history was repeating after FDR died and thought for some reason Truman would negotiate with him. This movie is a perfect example of what happens when you don't surrender when you have lost a war. Your entire country is destroyed but Hitler would rather see Germany burned to the ground and every German dead then accept defeat.

Bruno Ganz should’ve won an Oscar and every accolade in the world for his portrayal of Hitler. You almost forget you’re watching a movie at times. One of the best performances in any movie ever.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2XyOEmepcg

The film depicts the last 12 days of Hitler's life, including the Soviet Red Army's capture of Berlin and the scene of Hitler and his newlywed wife Eva Braun committing suicide in an underground bunker.

  1. The film sparked controversy in Germany immediately upon its release. Fueled by media hype, within just one month, 3 million people were persuaded to go to the theaters. In that month, "Hamburg Weekly" dedicated 17 pages to this film; even at the 45th conference of German historians, there was agreement to hold a day-long debate specifically about the film; former German Chancellor Kohl also unequivocally stated that the film was well made and hoped that more people would see it.

  2. "The Führer's Anger": This refers to a scene in the film where Hitler angrily roars upon hearing that General Steiner did not launch an attack. This particular segment is often used by netizens, who manipulate it with subtitles, mimicking "the Führer's voice" for humorous purposes.

  3. Traudl Junge's escape from the bunker wasn't as simple as depicted in the film, where she is shown to merely pass through the Soviet lines and ride a bicycle to safety. In reality, she was subjected to assault multiple times and was detained as a special high-ranking Nazi official.
