Nikolai Tokarev

was born in Moscow in 1983 from a musician’s family, his father a concert pianist, his mother a cellist. He started his formal education in 1988 at the renowned Gnessin Music School in Moscow which he left with the highest distinction in 2001. From 2004 until 2006, he studied at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Tokarev pursues his post graduate studies at the Robert-Schumann Music School in Düsseldorf with Prof. Barbara Szczepanska. As early as 1989, he had given his debut as a 6 year old with a solo recital in Moscow. At the age of 14, he started touring Europe and Japan. In 2000, Tokarev won the „10th Eurovision Grand Prix of Young Musicians“ in Bergen, Norway. During that same year, he performed in Tokyo with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Gerd Albrecht. In September of 2006, he received the „Orpheum Public Award“ at the 8th International Orpheum Music Festival at the Tonhalle Zurich.
During that same year, he won second place and the audience award at the “Géza Anda” competition in Zurich. Nikolai Tokarev is a regular guest at international festivals – at the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Rheingau Musik Festival, Kissinger Sommer, Davos Musik Festival and the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. He works with numerous orchestras, i.e. the Camerata Salzburg, the Tonhalle Orchester Zurich, the National Philharmonic of Russia and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

In April 2007, Nikolai Tokarev released his first piano recital for SONY Classical featuring works by Schubert, Chopin and Alexander Rosenblatt. He received the German Echo Classical 2008 award as best newcomer (piano). Nikolai Tokarev lives in Manchester. In autumn 2008, his next album with French repertoire (Ravel, Debussy, Rameau, Franck) will be released.
