A Scholarship is a financial award for excellence. A bursary is a means-tested award for parents who could not otherwise afford the fees, whose sons have been awarded a Scholarship by Harrow. Most Scholarships and bursaries are awarded in the months before a boy enters Harrow. Honorary Scholarships are sometimes given to boys after they have started at Harrow but there is no fee reduction. Bursaries are sometimes awarded to a boy whose parents’ income drops after he starts at the School.
What bursaries are available?
Harrow offers means-tested bursaries (fee reductions) of up to 100% to pupils who win a Scholarship of any sort but whose parents cannot afford our fees. Ability can mean academic ability, ability in music, or ability at a high level in another talent such as sport. Bursaries are awarded to pupils who enter the School at any level. Currently, in an average year, Harrow’s bursary and scholarships fund provides £400,000 for scholarships and £950,000 for bursaries. Pupils who receive large bursaries may also apply to receive assistance with the funding of 'extras' such as uniform, music instrument lessons and school trips.
You must tell us when you apply if you are likely to require an award which exceeds 5% of the School fee. If you do indicate that you will need a bursary, we will ask you to complete a strictly confidential form from which we will assess your financial circumstances and establish the level of assistance that we believe you will require.
For more information on applying for a bursary, please email webadmissions@harrowschool.org.uk or telephone 020 8872 8007.
What scholarships are available?
Up to thirty scholarships are awarded every year for academic excellence, exceptional ability in music or art, or for outstanding talent in some other field such as sport or acting. With the exception of Peter Beckwith Scholarships, the scholarships are normally worth 5% of the School fee and are held throughout a boy's time at Harrow subject to satisfactory performance. You must tell us if you are likely to require financial assistance which exceeds 5% of the school fee.
Boys may apply for more than one of the different types of scholarship, which include Academic, Music, Art and Outstanding Talent. Click on the links in the lefthand menu for more information about the different Scholarships that Harrow offers.
