@ LaBrisa, i should have made clear what i was responding to, but to follow up on your comments, i don't have a problem with people deriving strength or ethics from belief systems if it helps dealing with heavy issues of life. but seems to me most theistic believers, christians or muslims alike, are inculcated into this tradition as a matter of blind subordination, and in return assume an unfounded personal relationship with god or whatever supreme being you call it. it's rather conceited in my view to imagine one can engage with god in such a shallow manner. we are probably more alone in this universe than you might think. buddism on the other hand is more self-reflective and effacing and thus less harmful than the other god-based religions

I think if Christians would pay more attention to the often neglected Gospel of James, they would find out that one's deeds, not what he claims to believe, reveal his real faith.

To nightly:
In no way did I mean to disagree with you. On the contrary, I am well aware of the facts that you pointed out , which also constitute my criticism toward the Church and some Christians despite the fact that I greatly revere Jesus Christ and his love for mankind.
I think if Christians would pay more attention to the often neglected Gospel of James, they would find out that one's deeds, not what he claims to believe, reveals his real faith.
The greatest danger of religion is that imperfect human beings come together, validate each other's flawed ideas, and act them out in the name of God. Or even worse, some people use religion as a weapon for advancing their worldly ambitions, like what we have seen enough lately.
Whether one chooses to subscribe to a religion or not , it is important to keep the freethinking self alive.
at below,
sigh, my point about christian looters was in response to john777's cause/effect assertion between religion and poverty, as there is none. also to remind him of the early colonial wealth accumulation and land grab that started with christians wiping out entire races of pagans and nonbelievers. e.g. judeo-christians exterminating native americans. buddism on the other hand is not predicated on a theistic god, and therefore is not soaked in aggression and violence

to john777, the total followers of christianity and muslim are roughly 2 billion. so your god isn't the god for the majority of the world's population. christianity isn't the only way to give life meaning and judging fro your blabbering mess, any religion is better than what you have
To my friend nightly:
May blessing come to you like ocean wave, wave upon wave without ceasing.
to the half-baked christen down below, hindu and muslim-majority countries are probably more impoverished than the rest. but religion is not the cause of poverty but a coping mechanism. opium of the masses as they put it. buddism isn't so much a religion as a mentality, a mental state resigned to one's fate and extinction. in contrast fundamentalist christens believes in eradicating heretics and brutal crushing of enemies, thus paving their way for looting, *cough*, capital accumulation for their own prosperity.
