In the evaluation metrics, achievements should be on the top. there shouldn't be any question. but this is not the only item. there are other things in the list.for example, if someone can make some significant achievements in the States, can he make them back in China? I changed to my current compnay from a really big one last year, and definitely my performance is way beyond expectation, in terms of improving current process, advancing the fundamental understanding of the technologies, and establishing the methodology for technology development. Should I get promoted? I would really appreciate, if so. I would not be surprised, if not, because time is also a big factor here to tell if one can consistently accomplish, and contribute.

首先, 许多自己 run lab 的华人 PI,无论是在国内或者欧美,大都继承了原来 (postdoc) lab 的课题方向, 思路, 及其研究方法, 模型. 这给了他们很多优势。许多有名的华人PI大多是从 Big Name 的labs 出来的。这一点也适用于非华人 PI. 当然,自身努力, 才智是必不可少的。但这些内在条件应该说大多数,或者说许多,华人学者都具备。如同一颗螺丝钉,关键在于你是否 lucky, 把你放在了哪里. 当然,也在于自己有意识的争取或进取。
