《中美医学百年闭环:我在 FDA、NIH、协和与 HIV 科学之间的亲历》
当我回望自己在 FDA、NIH、闻喜、昆明、上海、南京之间的经历时,才真正理解这些看似分散的事件背后,其实隐藏着一个跨越百年的中美医学闭环。
这个闭环的起点可以追溯到 1901 年的雅礼协会(Yale?in?China),以及 1917 年洛克菲勒基金会在北京建立的协和医学院(PUMC)。美国教授在协和奠定了中国现代医学的基础,培养了第一代感染病学和免疫学专家。之后,约翰·霍普金斯大学与 NIH 的现代医学体系继续影响着协和的教学与科研。
在 NIH 的年代,我认识了张新权博士,他是 Schooley 博士的博士后,也是中国最早在美国接受现代 HIV 科学训练的研究者之一。他与范江博士一起编辑出版了中国第一本系统性的 HIV 科学著作。
范江博士是威斯康星大学的科学家,也是著名免疫学家费海(Dr. Fei Hai)的学生. 他作为第一任主编,把 NIH、ACTG 的 HIV 科学系统地引入中国,为协和感染科(王爱霞教授)以及全国的 HIV 临床医生奠定了基础。张新权博士是本书的第二署名编辑,由人民卫生出版社出版发行,使其成为中国 HIV 医学教育的起点。
在中国 HIV 科学体系中,范江博士和张新权博士属于更早、更资深的一代。他们在中国国家 HIV 项目建立之前,就已经将 NIH 的科学带入中国。后来,侯云德院士的学生邵一鸣博士在国家层面推动 HIV 监测、诊断与疫苗研究,形成了中国 HIV 科学的第二阶段。两代人的工作前后衔接,构成了中国 HIV 科学的完整发展链条。
与此同时,我在 FDA/CDER 从事抗病毒药物的药理研究,与 NIH 的 HIV 药物开发形成了天然的科学连接。Dan Kuritzkes 博士(哈佛医学院、ACTG 的 HIV 领袖)代表了美国 HIV 临床科学的最高水平,而协和的王爱霞教授则代表了中国感染病学的传承。范江博士、张新权博士的著作成为两者之间的桥梁。
我后来才明白,自己在闻喜、昆明、个旧、开远、上海、南京所看到的一切——包括美国玉米种子的历史、雅礼协会的遗迹、协和的医学传统、以及 HIV 公共卫生体系的建立——并不是孤立的事件,而是这个跨越百年的医学闭环的一部分。而我恰好走在这个闭环的中心。
Looking back at my experiences across FDA, NIH, Wenxi, Kunming, Shanghai, and Nanjing, I finally understood that these seemingly separate events were actually part of a century?long loop of U.S.–China medical collaboration.
The loop begins with Yale?in?China in 1901 and the Rockefeller Foundation’s establishment of PUMC in 1917. American professors laid the foundation of modern Chinese medicine, training the first generation of infectious disease and immunology experts. Johns Hopkins and NIH later continued shaping PUMC’s scientific tradition.
During my NIH years, I met Dr. Xinquan Zhang, a postdoctoral fellow under Dr. Schooley and one of the earliest Chinese researchers trained in modern HIV science in the United States. He worked with Dr. Jiang Fan to edit and publish the first comprehensive HIV scientific book in Chinese.
Dr. Jiang Fan, from the University of Wisconsin, was a student of the renowned immunologist Dr. Fei Hai. As the first editor of the book, he brought NIH and ACTG HIV science into China, forming the foundation for PUMC’s infectious disease program under Dr. Aixia Wang and for HIV clinicians nationwide. Dr. Zhang continued this work, expanding it into a cornerstone of China’s HIV medical education.
Within China’s HIV scientific development, Dr. Jiang Fan and Dr. Xinquan Zhang belong to the earlier, more senior generation. They introduced NIH HIV science into China *before* the national HIV program matured. Later, Dr. Yiming Shao—trained by Academician Hou Yun?de—led China’s national HIV surveillance, diagnostics, and vaccine research. Their work formed two successive phases of China’s HIV scientific evolution.
At the same time, I was working at FDA/CDER on antiviral pharmacology, naturally intersecting with NIH’s HIV drug development. Dr. Daniel Kuritzkes of Harvard and the ACTG represents the pinnacle of U.S. HIV clinical science, while Dr. Aixia Wang at PUMC represents the Chinese infectious disease lineage. The work of Dr. Jiang Fan and Dr. Xinquan Zhang became the bridge between these two worlds.
Only later did I realize that what I witnessed in Wenxi, Kunming, Gejiu, Kaiyuan, Shanghai, and Nanjing—including the history of American corn seeds, the legacy of Yale?in?China, the medical tradition of PUMC, and the development of China’s HIV public health system—were not isolated experiences. They were part of this century?long medical loop. And I happened to walk right through its center.
