康拉德的忧伤我的忧伤（2）——那忧伤的大自然
不如从大自然的描绘开始吧，毕竟被尊称为大~~~自然，为人类提供一切所需的基本生存资料。
（The sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like the beginning of an interminable waterway. In the offing the sea and the sky were welded together without a joint, and in the luminous space the tanned sails of the barges drifting up with the tide seemed to stand still in red clusters of canvas sharply peaked, with gleams of varnished sprits. A haze rested on the low shores that ran out to sea in vanishing flatness. The air was dark above Gravesend, and farther back still seemed condensed into a mournful gloom, brooding motionless over the biggest, and the greatest, town on earth.）
以上是小说开篇第一页第二段的描写。第二句中，一句话中竟同时表达出七种事物，内涵丰富至极，文笔纤细，让人感觉笔尖如同触角一般处处在蔓延，不停地去捕捉，特别是“red clusters of canvas sharply peaked, with gleams of varnished sprits.”的部分，修辞风采委实惊人。最后一句中，用“dark，Gravesend，mourful，gloom，motionless”五个负面情绪的词，与“biggest，greatest”两个正面的词形成一种对立，是大自然跟人类行为之间矛盾的融合，从而弥漫出一种淡淡的忧伤，与略带诙谐的讽刺。

We looked at the venerable stream not in the vivid flush of a short day that comes and departs for ever, but in the august light of abiding memories.）

And farther west on the upper reaches the place of the monstrous town was still marked ominously on the sky, a brooding gloom in sunshine, a lurid glare under the stars.”
上述是来自第三页中的一段描写，一开始措辞简单就像小学生，慢慢厉害了，到最后一句中出现了四个关键词“monstrous town”，“ominously”，“brooding gloom”以及“lurid glare”，通过这些精致的措辞清楚地表达出主角当下的心境，同时对将要发生的黑暗行径给出了暗示与预兆。
