　　丰都，扼长江水道要冲，处三峡库区腹地，居重庆版图中心，在东经170°28′3″至103°12′37″、北纬29°33′18″至30°16′25″之间。东连石柱，西靠涪陵，南接武隆、彭水，北邻垫江、忠县。清嘉庆《四川通志》称丰都“壮涪关之左位，控临江之上游，扼石柱之咽喉，亘垫江之屏障”，足见其位置之重要。

　　全县地形呈西北—东南走向分布，南北长87公里，东西宽54公里。境内山高而奇秀，江之南有七曜山和方斗山，江之北有蒋家山和黄草山，皆绵延数十里，形成了“四山夹三槽”的奇特地貌景观。长江横穿县境47公里，水上距重庆主城区172公里，陆上距重庆主城区150公里。全县幅员面积2901平方公里，总人口81万，现辖31个乡镇、27个社区、327个行政村。县城建成区面积9平方公里，城区总人口12万，是全国首批对外开放县、省级历史文化名城、全国优秀旅游城市、全国生态示范区建设试点县。境内资源富集。全县矿产资源蕴藏丰富，已探明具有开发价值的矿产资源20多种，其中天然气可采储量60亿立方米，水泥用灰岩资源量10亿吨，硫铁矿568.6万吨，铝土矿134万吨，另有蕴藏丰富的大理石、重晶石、黄铁矿、石英砂岩等急待开发。水能蕴藏量较大，丰都坐拥长江、龙河、渠溪河三大水系，水资源总量达31亿立方米（不含长江），极具开发潜力。森林资源密集，林地面积达207万亩，森林覆盖率为38.04%，境内有双桂山国家级森林公园、世平市级森林公园；植物种类有1500多种，动物种类有近300种。农产品资源丰富，包鸾竹席、丰都红心柚、楠竹锦橙、粟子贡米、高镇藠头、仙家豆腐乳、鬼城麻辣鸡块等丰都名特产品远销海内外。
