译记:这是首著名诗作。主题的解读上应该是没有什么异议:诗人以一只小鸟来比喻希望。这只小鸟无论如何艰难困苦永远歌唱着给人们带来温暖,只知奉献从不索取。
然而,细读下来,歧义顿生。比如第二节第二行的“the storm”是否在指上一行中的“the Gale”? 如果是,第二节就是在讲小鸟是在狂风abash它时唱出最甜蜜的歌声。如果否,第二节后三行则是在说没有什么风暴能够abash这只小鸟。拙译采用的是第二个理解。
再如,第三节第三行中的“in Extremity”是指地点环境,即前面两行提到的“最寒冷的陆地”和“最奇异的海域”,还是补充说明“asked”的程度,即“甚至”或“最多不过”的意思?两者均通。几经犹豫后,拙译采用了“作弊”的办法,两个可能性均入译文。
