Andrew Cherng (pronounced Chur-ng; born April 1948) is a Chinese-born American billionaire restaurateur. He is the founder and chairman of Panda Restaurant Group, based in Rosemead, California.[3] He is the co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Panda Express.

Cherng was born in April 1948 in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, Republic of China on the northern bank of the Yangtze River.[4] His father was Ming-Tsai Cherng, a chef.

He and his family then moved to Taiwan after the Kuomintang was defeated on the Chinese mainland in the Chinese Civil War,[2] and in 1963, his family moved to Yokohama, Japan, where his father had taken a job as a chef.

In 1966, at age 18, he immigrated to the United States to study at an American university. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics in 1970 from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, and a master's degree in applied mathematics from the University of Missouri in 1972.[4] At Baker he had met his future wife, Peggy Tsiang, born in Burma and raised in Hong Kong,[6] who went on to earn a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Oregon State University in 1971 and a PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri.[5]

Peggy Tsiang Cherng (pronounced Chur-ng, born 1947/1948) is an American billionaire businesswoman. Cherng co-founded Panda Express in 1983 and serves as the co-chief executive officer of Panda Restaurant Group. She was born in Burma (now Myanmar). With an estimated net worth of US$1.7 billion as of 2019, Forbes reported that she is America's second richest self-made woman born outside the United States

Peggy Tsiang was born in Burma (now Myanmar), and grew up in Hong Kong.[3] She attended Hong Kong's Clementi Secondary School, and graduated in 1966.[4] She went to the United States to attend Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, where as a freshman she met her husband to be, Andrew Cherng, then a sophomore.[5] She transferred a year later to Oregon State University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics in 1970.[4][6] She then attended the University of Missouri, earning a master's in computer science in 1971, and a PhD in electrical engineering[dubious ] in 1974.[4][7] She worked towards her PhD by developing a pattern-recognition program that digitized X-rays and applied algorithms to diagnose congenital heart disease. After earning her PhD, she and Andrew moved to Los Angeles where they married.[8]
