Last Sunday, my hubby and I went to watch a mystery drama play called "the Thin Man". We really enjoyed the play. It used to be a popular old movie, which inspired five sequels, and was nominated for four Oscars. This time, a stage play adapted from the same story has been on stage in our city for several weeks.
I particularly like a main character named Nora. Both Nora and her detective husband Nick are party animals. Nora describes themselves in a humorous and funny way - "There were a lot of browsers, but no buyers." At the stage play, Nora was arranged to be a Chinese woman. But she is obviously not a typical Chinese woman. She likes parties and other social events. She is very flirty and sexy. She admires her detective husband and always wants to investigate a murder. When she follows her husband and enters a gangster club, she wears raincoat and sunglasses. She dramatically, exaggeratedly and intentionally walks quietly, but her pet dog barks and exposes her appearance.I could not stop laughing at that moment. She looks so hilarious and extremely entertaining. Her husband warns her so many times that real detective cases are not like stories in a book and instead very cruel and complicated. But she is still as naughty as a curious girl. But her Chinese-style smartness and intelligence inspires her husband. Eventually they together figures out who the murderer is. At this play, it may be a good stereotype that Chinese people are very smart. Nora secretly has a crush on a handsome man and she says – “He can’t be the bad guy. He is too good looking.” Her husband is irritated by her a little bit and looks very jealous at that moment. A policeman peeks Nora’s chest under her sleeping robe and reminds her to cover it appropriately. Nora is not angry, and instead she jokes “I take your words as a compliment”. Another policeman searches her drawers rudely. She warns him and stops him cleverly - “If you are going to put your hands in my drawers at least buy me dinner first.” Nora sometimes makes fun of herself – “I am smart, … because I have a big head.” Overall, she is a highlight of the play – very exciting and very vigorous – this character really triggers people’s imagination greatly.
The actors’ performance is very professional and energized, and you can feel their passion when you are watching the play.
I bought two tickets for very good seats – not too far, too close to the stage, or aisle seat either. I like the atmosphere of a play theatre. It seems everyone is gentleman or lady – very polite.
During the mid-play break, my hubby excitedly told me that he saw our mayor. When we were leaving the playhouse, we found the mayor were walking very close to us. We overheard that he would eat dumplings at his dinner.
